Ask Kyyndred
Dear Kyyndred,
Dear Hiding, Slowly. First, make sure you’ve been on your path long enough to know what you do and don’t believe. This could take a year or more. Next, when you are ready to come out of the closet, start out by picking just one or two family members you are already close to and bring up the topic casually. Emphasize the good things your new path has brought you and your life and avoid sounding “preachy”. Let them ask questions but try not to answer more than they ask. As you gain trust and acceptance with a few members of your family, they may be able and willing to help bridge the gap between you and other members. Avoid confrontation and never ever try to convert other family members. Your family may freak out anyways. If they do, be patient and be present! Continue to be an active member of your family despite your differences and most likely, they’ll come around in time. Love, Kyyndred
